Was the LMS too big? Frederic Stansfield In his reply to my earlier letter about the size of the LMS September issue , Doug Landau November issue makes many interesting points describing the company’s engineering innovations. But two of Landau’s examples show how engineering developments within the LMS were subordinated to business issues. LMS management’s rejection of electrification proposals, because of insufficient return on capital, is unsurprising when neither the scheme nor the one linked London with a major city such as Birmingham.

To increase phylogenetic resolution among major groups Wahlenbergieae—Campanuleae , new sequences from the rbcL region were added to the trnL-F dataset obtained in a previous study. These phylogenies were used to infer ancestral areas and divergence times in Campanula and related genera using a Bayesian approach to molecular dating and dispersal—vicariance analyses that takes into account phylogenetic uncertainty.

The new phylogenetic analysis confirms Platycodoneae as the sister group of Wahlenbergieae—Campanuleae, the two last ones inter-graded into a well-supported clade. Biogeographic and dating analyses suggest that Western Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean have played a major role as centers of migration and diversification within the Campanula alliance, probably in relation to the intense orogenic activity that took place in this region during the Late Neogene, and that could have promoted isolation and allopatric speciation within lineages.

Diversification rates within several Campanula lineages would have increased at the end of the Miocene, coinciding with the Messinian Stage.

Stonehenge There is evidence from flint artefacts in a quarry at Westbury-sub-Mendip that an ancestor of modern man, possibly Homo heidelbergensis , was present in the future Somerset from around , years ago. The British mainland was connected to the continent during the ice age and humans may have repeatedly migrated into and out of the region as the climate fluctuated.

There is evidence of human habitation in the caves at Cheddar Gorge 11, —10, years BC, during a partial thaw in the ice age. The human bone fragments it contained, from about 21 different individuals, are thought to be roughly between 10, and 10, years old. At the end of the last Ice Age the Bristol Channel was dry land, but subsequently the sea level rose, resulting in major coastal changes. The Somerset Levels were flooded, but the dry points such as Glastonbury and Brent Knoll are known to have been occupied by Mesolithic hunters.

Britain’s oldest complete skeleton, Cheddar Man , lived at Cheddar Gorge around BC in the Upper Palaeolithic or Old Stone Age , shortly after the end of the ice age; [35] however, it is unclear whether the region was continuously inhabited during the previous years, or if humans returned to the gorge after a final cold spell. A Palaeolithic flint tool found in West Sedgemoor is the earliest indication of human presence on the Somerset Levels.

These included the Post Track and the Sweet Track. The Sweet Track, dating from the 39th century BC, is thought to be the world’s oldest timber trackway and was once thought to be the world’s oldest engineered roadway. Many monuments, barrows and trackways exist. Coin evidence shows that the region was split between the Durotriges , Dobunni and Dumnonii. The Iron Age tribe in Dorset were the Durotriges, “water dwellers”, whose main settlement is represented by Maiden Castle.

Many of the family names associated with North Berwick in the seventeenth century continued to dominate the Town Council in the eighteenth century including the Home, Lauder, Dalrymple and Nisbet families. Naturally occurring, ambient seismic waves form an ever-present source of energy that is conventionally regarded as unusable since it is not impulsive. As such it is generally removed from seismic data and subsequent analysis. A new method known as seismic interferometry can be used to extract useful information about the Earth’s subsurface from the ambient noise wavefield. Consequently, seismic interferometry is an important new tool for exploring areas which are otherwise seismically quiescent, such as the British Isles in which there are relatively few strong earthquakes.

One of the possible applications of seismic interferometry is ambient noise tomography ANT. ANT is a way of using interferometry to image subsurface seismic velocity variations using seismic surface waves extracted from the background ambient vibrations of the Earth. To date, ANT has been used successfully to image the Earth’s crust and upper-mantle on regional and continental scales in many locations and has the power to resolve major geological features such as sedimentary basins and igneous and metamorphic cores.

Here we provide a review of seismic interferometry and ANT, and show that the seismic interferometry method works well within the British Isles. We illustrate the usefulness of the method in seismically quiescent areas by presenting the first surface wave group velocity maps of the Scottish Highlands using only ambient seismic noise. These maps show low velocity anomalies in sedimentary basins such as the Moray Firth, and high velocity anomalies in igneous and metamorphic centres such as the Lewisian complex.

They also suggest that the Moho shallows from south to north across Scotland which agrees with previous geophysical studies in the region. Previous article in issue.
